Joel Nakamura
Award winning artist Joel Nakamura is known for his unique style: a blend of folk art and sophisticated iconography rendered in a neo-primitive technique. He is chosen for many of his commissions for his knowledge of tribal art, mythology, and for his ability to convey stories and information in an intricate and engaging manner.
Nakamura splits his time between commercial and fine art projects. His work is in numerous private and corporate collections, including Wynonna Judd, Chick Corea, and US embassies around the world.
Who are some of your favorite artists?
When I was 8 years old it was Miro. I still love Miro, the color, composition
Abstraction. There is an intangible quality about his work that I can not define. When I was in High school my favorite artist/ illustrator was Roger Dean. I listened to
YES. The cover art was actually part of the musical experience. It was a great partnership with visuals and the music. I was transformed to another reality.
Tell us something most people wouldn't know about you...
I am a 2nd degree Black Belt
In Aikido. A non-violent Japanese Martial art. It is a great process of self cultivation.
And connects me to my Samurai roots.
What are your favorite Apple products?
I love them all, but mine are all antiques.
